Immersion

Whilst being a sound, tried and tested form of water heating, the immersion heater does have an Achilles heel in that it can harbor the legionella bacteria, which is a great threat to human health and safety. Below is a short explanation regarding this bacteria, as many people are blissfully unaware of its existence. A Paddington Plumber is highly aware of the dangers of legionella.

Legionella is still fairly rare, however, it is possible for it to form in water at a temperature below 60° Centigrade, however it will not live for too long at this temperature and will die if the temperature rises. It is able to survive between 20°C and 40°C and will usually spread itself in vapour or mist form. Provided the water temperature is regulated there should not be an issue with the legionella bacteria. But as you can see, the immersion heater can be a great place for it to live.

Immersion.

The heater that supplies all you and your home’s hot water needs is best known as the immersion heater. Immersion is the electrical heating element that sits in the water tank and makes the heat for the water. It is very similar in to an electric kettle, but on a much bigger scale. Paddington Plumbers can fit immersion heaters.

The element heats the water in the tank, controlled by a thermostat that will supply the element (with electricity) if the temperature of the water in the tank falls below 60°C to protects from scalding (the temperature is maintained at this level).

It is fed by a cold water supply which runs in at the bottom. The immersion heater or heaters (as fitted), begin to heat the water. Once hot, the water can be drawn from the top of the tank. If the immersion heater or (electrical element) is fitted in a cylinder that is unvented it needs a high limit cut out thermostat to be fitted (90degrees C) so it does not boil.
