Plumbers Terms

Here are some terms that are used by experienced that are used by plumbing professionals:

Bidet:
This is a plumbing appliance that is very much like a toilet bowl used for personal hygiene. It is fitted to the floor, normally adjacent to a toilet, and is comprised of a wash type basin, tap and spray arrangement. Paddington Plumbers can fit this type of appliance.

Open Flue Boilers:
An old fashioned type of boiler where some or all of the air it uses to burn fuel is taken from the room that I sits in. The result is they need lots of ventilation and can be very dangerous.

Machine Bend:
A machine bend is when you bend pipework rather than use a fitting. There is a machine called a tube bender which makes the bend, and this results in a much gentler curve that will not restrict water flow and is far less prone to leaking. A Paddington Plumber can use a bender to shape pipework.

Gas Safe Register:
This organization took over from CORGI and is responsible for gas safety in the UK, a plumber needs to be gas safe registered to be able to carry out gas related work.

Expansion Vessel:
As water heats it expands. An expansion vessel is a tank that is used to contain the expanded water. It is often called the ‘feed and expansion tank’ as it fulfills two roles, one is feeding fresh water into the system and the other is to allow hot water to expand safely.

Gate Valve:
A type of tap that raises and lowers a bar of metal, or ‘gate’. When the gate is down the tap is closed, and up the tap is fully open. They are popular because when the gate is up, water can flow straight through with no restriction.

Hose Union Bib Tap:
The outside garden tap is one of these in that it has a spout to which you can connect a hose and the tap itself screwed onto a back plate on the wall.
