Washing Machine (disconnection)





The disconnection of an appliance such as a washing machine would probably be in the hands of the owner as the flood risk is quite high.

Before you start, Pull the machine away from the wall and unplug the mains electrical supply. Now if your machine has two hoses (hot and cold), turn them both off and disconnect the hoses. If it has only one then again turn it off. There should be no reason to isolate the whole water supply as the hoses have levers on them. They are usually chrome isolation valves that attach to the appliances hose(s). To turn off, move the lever 90°, so it is across the hose do this for both. Ensure you have something to collect any excess water underneath the valve. Undo the hoses by hand, (you may need a wrench). Check that isolation valves are closed and are not leaking. Should a tap leak, follow these steps:

a). Turn the water off at the main stop-cock this time. Drain system at the kitchen sink open the faulty tap and drain the water away.
b). Remove by unscrewing the nut at the back of the tap that connects it to the pipe.
c). Having acquired a replacement fit a new tap, reusing the old back nut and olive, if the olive looks damaged either use PTFE tape or maybe even cut the pipe back using a pipe slice and fitting a new nut and olive on the new end. Paddington Plumbers fit new 90 degree taps.

If you are not replacing the old machine with a new one at once, then, blank off the ends of the taps and also the waste water hose and the stand pipe. New washing machines are now mainly cold water fed only.
