Tank Protection (anode)
If your water heater develops a leak, then it may be down to a common problem with metal and water and that is RUST rear its ugly head. A piece of equipment is available and has been for many years that will certainly reduce if not completely cure a rust induced leak. A rod called an anode (sacrificial anode) is fitted in the water heater tank to prevent it from rusting. It works by rotting itself, instead of the tank rotting. It is fitted inside the tank and will counteract the affects of the chemical reaction between the tank metal and the water in it. When the anode is in good condition the tank damage is greatly reduced. The condition however cannot be seen externally. So the tank needs isolating and draining. Once that is done, find and remove the anode with a wrench. Below is the method of replacement. Visually inspect the anode for deterioration at least twice a year, this will give you an idea of how long the anode will last. It is a good idea to then include its inspection in your maintenance schedule accordingly. Paddington Plumbers know about anodes. Anodes come in different shapes and sizes, be ready with the details of your system so that you get the correct one. You can find this information on a label on the water-heater.Method:1). Switch off the power supply to the heater and isolate the cold water inlet valve on the heater. Undo the hexagonal bolt holding the anode in place and take out the remaining bit of the old one. Install the new anode. A Paddington Plumber can replace this. Fit the new piece in the reverse order that old one was removed. Be sure to use Teflon tape on the threaded fitting to prevent a leak. Turn the water and power to the water heater back on.<< Older post Newer post >>Recent posts
